The Kyne

by C.A. Scott & Alicia Ingersol

SUMMARY

The Kyne are a people that love to celebrate and enjoy singing until all hours of the night, while the Scrowl hunt during the day and desire nothing more than to retire to their warm cave and sleep at night, in order to get up and hunt for food the next day.  The Scrowl despise the Kyne because their celebrations can be heard all the way to the Scrowls’ cave.  When the Scrowl find out that they can destroy the Kyne’s voice, they render all the Kyne mute.  This leaves the Kyne lost and sullen until they develop a new language with signs and dance.  The Scrowl are content to leave the Kyne alone until a Kynelin (baby) is born and the Scrowl realize they must destroy each infant’s voice.  This is a fantasy tale of two cultures struggling to coexist.  “The Kyne” involves a large amount of movement and dance; it can be made as simplistic or elaborate as necessary depending on the ability levels of your cast.

SETTING

CS is a fire pit with trees along the outskirts and around it.  It is suggested that you create multiple levels for the Kyne to be able jump up on or climb to since they are forest dwelling creatures.  Off to one side is a rock cliff and a cave opening with light coming from it at times.  Anything else can be added for effect or levels as desired or budget permits.  The original production made much use of standard unit set pieces and decided to allow it to look a bit like the ruins of a more ancient civilization.
